AKG N60NC (2017) vs Sony MDR-1000X (2015)

Analysis:

The AKG N60NC Wireless (2017) is a great Closed-Back Headphone for its $159 asking price.

The Sony MDR-1000X (2015), however, while a reasonable product for $398, doesn't stack up against its competitors quite as well. If you're considering Closed-Back Headphones in the $380 range, you might want to check out some better options.

The AKG N60NC Wireless (2017) was loved by reviewers at Rtings, a highly trusted source that performs reliable in-depth testing. It did great in its "The 5 Best Noise Cancelling Headphones Under $200 - Summer 2020" roundup where it was named its "Runner Up for Best On-Ear Noise Cancelling Headphones Under $200 - More Affordable Alternative", which, in itself, makes it a product worth considering.

Moving on to the Sony MDR-1000X (2015): it was unable to reach the very top of any roundups from sources that conduct reliable and unbiased testing. Nonetheless, it still managed to impress reviewers from a number of such sites, like Expert Reviews, TrustedReviews, SoundGuys, Techradar, CNET, PCmag, Rtings, and Head-fi, enough for them to include them on those lists.

We analyzed all of the review data that we could find on these two Closed-Back Headphones. First, we examined sources that tested and scored both of these products - TrustedReviews, SoundGuys, Pocket-lint, CNET, and Rtings favored the Sony MDR-1000X (2015) over the AKG N60NC Wireless (2017), whereas reviewers at What Hi-Fi?, Techradar, PCmag, and TechHive haven't shown a preference for either.

Then we took a look at which sources liked them the most - we found that the AKG N60NC Wireless (2017) was best received by What Hi-Fi? - it gave it a score of 10, whereas the Sony MDR-1000X (2015) got its highest score of 10 from reviewers at Expert Reviews.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Closed-Back Headphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Closed-Back Headphones being 7.4 out of 10, whereas the AKG N60NC Wireless (2017) and Sony MDR-1000X (2015) managed averages of 8.3 and 8.7 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct AKG N60NC Wireless (2017) vs. Sony MDR-1000X (2015) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
