Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) vs AKG Y500

Analysis:

The Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) makes for an outstanding Closed-Back Headphone at $189. The AKG Y500, however, while overall a good product for its asking price, doesn't quite manage to stand out from its competition - there are better Closed-Back Headphones that can be found for around $100 available here.

The Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) got praised by Tom's Guide and Rtings - two highly trusted sources that perform in-depth hands-on testing. It was awarded the "Excellent noise cancellation for cheap" title from Tom's Guide and "Runner Up for Best Over-Ear Noise Cancelling Headphones Under $200 - Wired Alternative With Better Noise Isolation" from Rtings in their respective Closed-Back Headphone roundups.

As for the AKG Y500, it wasn't able to earn a top spot in any roundups from trusted sources that conduct their own hands-on testing. Nevertheless, it managed to impress reviewers at AVForums, Expert Reviews, and Wirecutter (NYTimes) enough to make it onto their respective shortlists.

We examined all of the review data that we could find and first took a look at sources that reviewed both of them, like What Hi-Fi? and Pocket-lint, and found that they haven't shown a preference for either product.

Then we checked which sources liked these two Closed-Back Headphones best and found that the Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) got its highest, 10, review score from reviewers at Tom's Guide, whereas the AKG Y500 earned its best score of 10 from What Hi-Fi?.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Closed-Back Headphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Closed-Back Headphones being 7.4 out of 10, whereas the Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) and AKG Y500 managed averages of 8.7 and 8.0 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) vs. AKG Y500 comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
