Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (2004) vs AKG Y500

Analysis:

The Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (2004) is a great Closed-Back Headphone for its $99 asking price.

The AKG Y500, however, while a reasonable product for $55, doesn't stack up against its competitors quite as well. If you're considering Closed-Back Headphones in the $60 range, you might want to check out some better options.

The Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (2004) has impressed reviewers from two sources that are among the most highly trusted on the internet, namely SoundGuys and PCmag. It did great in their objective hands-on roundups - it earned the "Best sound" and "Best for Inexpensive Mastering" awards from SoundGuys and PCmag, respectively. That's high praise from such reputable sources.

As for the AKG Y500 - it impressed reviewers at What Hi-Fi?, a trustworthy source that conducts solid hands-on testing. It did great in its "Best iPhone headphones 2020: budget, premium, wireless" roundup - in fact, it earned its "A tempting mix of fantastic design, good audio and clever features." title, which, on its own, indicates a certain level of quality.

We couldn't find any sources that tested both of these Closed-Back Headphones, so we only analyzed how they performed in reviews from different sites.

We first examined which sources rated each of these best and found that the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (2004) got its highest, 9, rating from PCmag, while the AKG Y500 earned its best, 10, score from What Hi-Fi?.

Lastly, in order to better compare them to the rest of their competition, we averaged out their review scores. The AKG Y500 managed to get 8.0 out of 10 - considerably better than the 7.4 review average of Closed-Back Headphones in general - whereas the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (2004) earned 7.2 points.

It should be said that doing a direct Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (2004) vs. AKG Y500 comparison might not be entirely fair due to the difference in their prices - some sources don't put much weight on value for money and thus tend to give better review scores to more expensive products.
