Apple iPhone 11 Pro/Pro Max (2019) vs Apple iPhone XR (2018)

Analysis:

The Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max is one of the very best Smartphones that one can get for around $1,100. The Apple iPhone XR, however, while a very good choice at its $670 price point, falls just short of being remarkable.

The Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max was loved by reviewers at Tom's Guide, a highly trusted source that performs reliable in-depth testing. It did great in its "Best phones in 2020" roundup where it was named its "The most versatile iPhone for photographers", which, in itself, makes it a product worth considering.

Taking a look at the Apple iPhone XR, we found it was well-received by reviewers from a couple of reliable sources that conduct their own hands-on testing, including Android Central, CNET, and Techradar. It performed great in their Smartphone roundups - it managed to earn the "Best for iOS" title from Android Central, "Best budget iPhone" from CNET, and "The best iPhone for those looking for great battery life" from Techradar, which is a notable accomplishment.

Out of the sources that tested and rated both of these Smartphones, Tom's Guide and PhoneArena preferred the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, whereas reviewers at TrustedReviews and Techradar liked the Apple iPhone XR better. Expert Reviews, What Hi-Fi?, Pocket-lint, Digitaltrends, and AVForums gave them identical review scores.

We also took a look at which sources liked these products best - the highest Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max rating came from Tom's Guide, whereas the Apple iPhone XR most impressed reviewers at Expert Reviews; they earned scores of 10 and 10, respectively.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Smartphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Smartphones being 7.5 out of 10, whereas the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max and Apple iPhone XR managed averages of 9.2 and 8.8 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max vs. Apple iPhone XR comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
