Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018) vs Apple iPhone XR (2018)

Analysis:

The Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018) and Apple iPhone XR make for very strong choices and are great Smartphones for their respective $409 and $599 asking prices. Depending on how much you're willing to spend, either of these options will serve you well.

While the Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018) wasn't able to make it to the very top of any roundups from sources that perform quality hands-on testing, it still got featured in a large number of them. Android Central, GSMArena, PCWorld, PhoneArena, AVForums, The Verge, Notebookcheck.net, CNET, PCmag, Techradar, TrustedReviews, Expert Reviews, Tom's Guide, Reviewed, Android Authority, and SoundGuys have all deemed it worthy of a place on their respective shortlists.

As for our analysis of the Apple iPhone XR - it has done great in a number of roundups done by unbiased sources that conduct their own testing, like Android Central, CNET, and Techradar - it was named "Best for iOS" by Android Central, "Best budget iPhone" by CNET, and "The best iPhone for those looking for great battery life" by Techradar.

Out of the sources that tested and rated both of these Smartphones, The Verge and PCmag preferred the Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018), whereas reviewers at Expert Reviews, TrustedReviews, Techradar, Digitaltrends, and CNET liked the Apple iPhone XR better. What Hi-Fi?, Pocket-lint, PhoneArena, AVForums, and WIRED gave them identical review scores.

We also took a look at which sources liked these products best - the highest Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018) rating came from What Hi-Fi?, whereas the Apple iPhone XR most impressed reviewers at Expert Reviews; they earned scores of 10 and 10, respectively.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Smartphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Smartphones being 7.5 out of 10, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018) and Apple iPhone XR managed averages of 8.6 and 8.8 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018) vs. Apple iPhone XR comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
