ASUS AC2900 (RT-AC86U) vs D-Link DIR-800 series (2017)
The ASUS AC2900 (RT-AC86U) is an exemplary product and sets the bar for all other Wi-Fi Routers at the $160 budget.
The D-Link DIR-878, however, is merely passable for its price. We suggest taking a look at some better options if you're considering buying a Wi-Fi Router in the $75 range.
The ASUS AC2900 (RT-AC86U) was loved by reviewers at PCmag, a highly trusted source that performs reliable in-depth testing. It did great in its "The Best Gaming Routers for 2021" roundup where it was named its "Best for Gamers on a Budget", which, in itself, makes it a product worth considering.
Taking a look at the D-Link DIR-878, it got featured in roundups from two reliable sources that conduct their own testing - techadvisor.com and PCmag - but it fell short of earning a top spot in either.
When we thoroughly analyzed their review scores, we learned that all of the sources that tested both Wi-Fi Routers, including PCmag, preferred the ASUS AC2900 (RT-AC86U) over the D-Link DIR-878.
We also took a look at which sources they managed to impress the most. The ASUS AC2900 (RT-AC86U) was liked best by TechSpot, which gave it a score of 9.1, while the D-Link DIR-878 got its highest, 8, score from techadvisor.com.
Lastly, we averaged out all of their review ratings and observed that the ASUS AC2900 (RT-AC86U), with its 8.6 average, performed considerably better than most Wi-Fi Routers - the mean score for the product category being 7.4 out of 10 - while the D-Link DIR-878 managed an average of 7.0.
There's one caveat here - it might not be entirely justifiable to do a direct ASUS AC2900 (RT-AC86U) vs. D-Link DIR-878 review average comparison since they aren't priced the same and more expensive products tend to get higher review scores from some sources.
