Audio-Technica ATH-M20x (2014) vs Beats Solo3 (2016)

Analysis:

The Audio-Technica ATH-M20x (2014) is a great Closed-Back Headphone for its $49 asking price.

The Beats Solo3 (2016), however, while a reasonable product for $144, doesn't stack up against its competitors quite as well. If you're considering Closed-Back Headphones in the $130 range, you might want to check out some better options.

The Audio-Technica ATH-M20x (2014) was loved by reviewers at Rtings, a highly trusted source that performs reliable in-depth testing. It did great in its "The 5 Best DJ Headphones - Summer 2020" roundup where it was named its "Best Budget DJ Headphones", which, in itself, makes it a product worth considering.

Returning to the Beats Solo3 (2016), it managed to impress reviewers from two sources that are considered to be some of the most highly trusted on the internet, thanks to their in-depth hands-on testing - Rtings and SoundGuys. It performed great in their respective Closed-Back Headphone roundups - it was named "Best On-Ear Wireless Headphones For Battery Life" by Rtings and "Best on ear headphones" by SoundGuys. That's quite an endorsement, especially coming from such high-quality sources.

We conducted an analysis of all of the review data that we could find on these two products. First, we focused on sources that tested and rated both of them, like Rtings, and learned that they all showed a preference for the Beats Solo3 (2016).

Then we took a look at the highest review scores that these two Closed-Back Headphones received. We found that the Audio-Technica ATH-M20x (2014) managed to earn a rating of 5.2 from Rtings, whereas the Beats Solo3 (2016) got its highest, 9, score from reviewers at Runnerclick.

Finally, we analyzed all of their review data and compared their averages to other options on the market. With an average review rating of 7.2 out of 10 points, the Beats Solo3 (2016) performed similarly to most of its competitors - the overall average review score for Closed-Back Headphones being 7.4 - whereas the Audio-Technica ATH-M20x (2014) performed worse than most, with its 5.2 average.

It's worth keeping in mind that a direct Audio-Technica ATH-M20x (2014) vs. Beats Solo3 (2016) comparison might not be entirely fair because some sources tend to ignore value for money when assigning their scores and thus often give better reviews to more expensive products.
