Bose QuietComfort 20 (2013) vs Shure SE215 (2011)

Analysis:

The Bose QuietComfort 20 (2013) is one of the very best Canal Earphones that one can get for around $240. The Shure SE215 (2011), however, while a very good choice at its $95 price point, falls just short of being remarkable.

The Bose QuietComfort 20 (2013) has done great in quite a few roundups from some of the most highly trusted sources available, such as Rtings, SoundGuys, Tom's Guide, and Wirecutter, which perform high-quality in-depth testing. It got awarded the "Best Wired Noise Cancelling Earbuds" title by Rtings, "Best All-Around" by SoundGuys, and "Best Bose noise-canceling earbuds" by Tom's Guide in their respective roundups. Earning that much praise from such respected sources is undoubtedly an impressive accomplishment.

As for our Shure SE215 (2011) analysis - two highly trusted sources that perform well-thought-out hands-on testing have found it to be a great product - it earned the "Best Comfort" and "Runner Up for Best Wired Earbuds For Small Ears - Better-Built Alternative" awards from SoundGuys and Rtings, respectively, which is quite an impressive feat.

We analyzed all of the review data that we could find on these two Canal Earphones. First, we examined sources that tested and scored both of these products - Head-fi favored the Shure SE215 (2011) over the Bose QuietComfort 20 (2013), whereas reviewers at PCmag, TrustedReviews, Techradar, and Digitaltrends haven't shown a preference for either.

Then we took a look at which sources liked them the most - we found that the Bose QuietComfort 20 (2013) was best received by PCmag - it gave it a score of 9, whereas the Shure SE215 (2011) got its highest score of 10 from reviewers at Expert Reviews.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Canal Earphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Canal Earphones being 7.4 out of 10, whereas the Bose QuietComfort 20 (2013) and Shure SE215 (2011) managed averages of 8.2 and 8.6 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Bose QuietComfort 20 (2013) vs. Shure SE215 (2011) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
