Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) vs Sennheiser PXC 550 (2016)

Analysis:

The Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) is one of the very best Over-Ear Headphones that one can get for around $250. The Sennheiser PXC 550 (2016), however, while a very good choice at its $370 price point, falls just short of being remarkable.

The Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) has managed to impress reviewers from some of the most highly trusted sources on the internet, including Tom's Guide and Rtings. It performed great in their in-depth hands-on roundups - it was awarded the "Excellent noise cancellation for cheap" title by Tom's Guide and "Best Wired Noise Cancelling Headphones" by Rtings in their respective Over-Ear Headphone roundups. That's high praise, especially when coming from such high-quality sources.

Returning to the Sennheiser PXC 550 (2016), Rtings, a source that's known for its high-quality in-depth testing, has great things to say about it. In fact, it was named its "Best Over-Ear Headphones For Running" in its "The 7 Best Headphones For Running - Spring 2020" roundup, which is quite a feat.

Out of the sources that tested and rated both of these Over-Ear Headphones, Techradar, PCmag, and CNET preferred the Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014), whereas reviewers at Head-fi and Rtings liked the Sennheiser PXC 550 (2016) better. What Hi-Fi? and TrustedReviews gave them identical review scores.

We also took a look at which sources liked these products best - the highest Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) rating came from Tom's Guide, whereas the Sennheiser PXC 550 (2016) most impressed reviewers at HomeTheaterReview.com; they earned scores of 10 and 10, respectively.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Over-Ear Headphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Over-Ear Headphones being 7.5 out of 10, whereas the Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) and Sennheiser PXC 550 (2016) managed averages of 8.7 and 8.5 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) vs. Sennheiser PXC 550 (2016) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
