Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) vs Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017)

Analysis:

The Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) and Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) are both excellent choices at their respective budgets. The Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) is among the very best Closed-Back Headphones for $247 and the Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) is exemplary at $279. Depending on how much you're willing to spend, you can't go wrong with either option.

The Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) has managed to impress reviewers from some of the most highly trusted sources on the internet, including Tom's Guide and Rtings. It performed great in their in-depth hands-on roundups - it was awarded the "Excellent noise cancellation for cheap" title by Tom's Guide and "Best Wired Noise Cancelling Headphones" by Rtings in their respective Closed-Back Headphone roundups. That's high praise, especially when coming from such high-quality sources.

As for our Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) analysis - two highly trusted sources that perform well-thought-out hands-on testing have found it to be a great product - it earned the "Best All-around" and "Great noise cancellation meets even greater sound" awards from SoundGuys and Tom's Guide, respectively, which is quite an impressive feat.

Out of the sources that tested and rated both of these Closed-Back Headphones, Tom's Guide and PCmag preferred the Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014), whereas reviewers at Pocket-lint, TrustedReviews, Head-fi, CNET, and Rtings liked the Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) better. Techradar and What Hi-Fi? gave them identical review scores.

We also took a look at which sources liked these products best - the highest Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) rating came from Tom's Guide, whereas the Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) most impressed reviewers at Digitaltrends; they earned scores of 10 and 10, respectively.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Closed-Back Headphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Closed-Back Headphones being 7.4 out of 10, whereas the Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) and Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) managed averages of 8.7 and 8.9 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) vs. Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
