The Sony α7 III (2018) and Canon EOS RP (2019) make for very strong choices and are great Mirrorless Cameras for their respective $1498 and $899 asking prices. Depending on how much you're willing to spend, either of these options will serve you well.
The Sony α7 III (2018) has managed to impress reviewers from some of the most highly trusted sources on the internet, including Digital Camera World and Rtings. It performed great in their in-depth hands-on roundups - it was awarded the "Top Pick" title by shotkit.com and "Best Premium" by reviewgeek.com in their respective Mirrorless Camera roundups. That's high praise, especially when coming from such high-quality sources.
Taking a look at the Canon EOS RP (2019), we found that it was liked by some of the most highly trusted sources, such as Rtings, Digital Camera World, and Digital Photography Review - it was named "Best Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera Under $1,000" by Rtings, "Ranked 1 out of 7" by Digital Camera World, and "Ranked 3 out of 4" by Digital Photography Review.
When we thoroughly analyzed their review scores, we learned that all of the sources that tested both Mirrorless Cameras, including PCmag, ePHOTOzine, Photography Blog, Expert Reviews, Techradar, DXOMARK, camerajabber.com, TrustedReviews, cameralabs.com, Digital Camera World, Digital Photography Review, and Rtings, preferred the Sony α7 III (2018) over the Canon EOS RP (2019).
We also took a look at which sources they managed to impress the most. The Sony α7 III (2018) was liked best by PCmag, which gave it a score of 10, while the Canon EOS RP (2019) got its highest, 9, score from ePHOTOzine.
Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Mirrorless Cameras on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Mirrorless Cameras being 7.9 out of 10, whereas the Sony α7 III (2018) and Canon EOS RP (2019) managed averages of 9.4 and 8.1 points, respectively.
Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Sony α7 III (2018) vs. Canon EOS RP (2019) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
