Denon AH-MM400 (2016) vs Audio-Technica ATH-SR5BT (2017)

Analysis:

The Denon AH-MM400 (2016) is a relatively good On-Ear Headphone for people that are willing to spend around $360. The Audio-Technica ATH-SR5BT (2017), by contrast, is quite unremarkable and doesn't stand out in any meaningful way from other products at this price point.

In both cases, however, we recommend that you take look at some other options at the $360 and $200 budget ranges; in all likelihood you'll find some better alternatives.

If you're still interested in learning more about the Denon AH-MM400 (2016) and Audio-Technica ATH-SR5BT (2017), however, we wrote a summary of what we know about them:

The Denon AH-MM400 (2016) was loved by reviewers at Wirecutter (NYTimes), a highly trusted source that performs reliable in-depth testing. It did great in its "The Best Everyday Audiophile Headphones" roundup where it was named its "Top Pick", which, in itself, makes it a product worth considering.

As for the Audio-Technica ATH-SR5BT (2017), it wasn't able to earn a top spot in any roundups from trusted sources that conduct their own hands-on testing. Nevertheless, it managed to impress reviewers at Techradar, Head-fi, and Tech Advisor enough to make it onto their respective shortlists.

To get a better idea of how they fare when compared directly to each other, we analyzed review scores of sources that tested both. Head-fi, for example, preferred the Denon AH-MM400 (2016), while Techradar and Tech Advisor rated both of them the same.

We also took a look at which sources had the best things to say about them. We learned that the Denon AH-MM400 (2016) got reviewed the highest by Head-fi - it gave it a rating of 9.7, while the Audio-Technica ATH-SR5BT (2017) most impressed reviewers at Techradar, which gave it a score of 9.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other On-Ear Headphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by On-Ear Headphones being 7.4 out of 10, whereas the Denon AH-MM400 (2016) and Audio-Technica ATH-SR5BT (2017) managed averages of 8.7 and 8.3 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Denon AH-MM400 (2016) vs. Audio-Technica ATH-SR5BT (2017) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
