Denon AH-MM400 (2016) vs Edifier H840 (2013)

Analysis:

The Denon AH-MM400 (2016) is a relatively good Closed-Back Headphone for people that are willing to spend around $340. The Edifier H840 (2013), by contrast, is quite unremarkable and doesn't stand out in any meaningful way from other products at this price point.

In both cases, however, we recommend that you take look at some other options at the $340 and $30 budget ranges; in all likelihood you'll find some better alternatives.

If you're still interested in learning more about the Denon AH-MM400 (2016) and Edifier H840 (2013), however, we wrote a summary of what we know about them:

The Denon AH-MM400 (2016) was loved by reviewers at Wirecutter (NYTimes), a highly trusted source that performs reliable in-depth testing. It did great in its "The Best Everyday Audiophile Headphones" roundup where it was named its "Top Pick", which, in itself, makes it a product worth considering.

As for the Edifier H840 (2013) - it impressed reviewers at Reviewed, a trustworthy source that conducts solid hands-on testing. It did great in its "Best Headphones Under $50 of 2020" roundup - in fact, it earned its "Top Pick" title, which, on its own, indicates a certain level of quality.

When we thoroughly analyzed their review scores, we learned that all of the sources that tested both Closed-Back Headphones, including Head-fi, preferred the Denon AH-MM400 (2016) over the Edifier H840 (2013).

We also took a look at which sources they managed to impress the most. The Denon AH-MM400 (2016) was liked best by Head-fi, which gave it a score of 9.7, while the Edifier H840 (2013) got its highest, 8, score from Head-fi.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Closed-Back Headphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Closed-Back Headphones being 7.4 out of 10, whereas the Denon AH-MM400 (2016) and Edifier H840 (2013) managed averages of 8.7 and 8.0 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Denon AH-MM400 (2016) vs. Edifier H840 (2013) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
