Audioengine HD3 vs Edifier R2000DB

Analysis:

The Audioengine HD3 is an exemplary product and sets the bar for all other Computer Speakers at the $340 budget.

The Edifier R2000DB, however, is merely passable for its price. We suggest taking a look at some better options if you're considering buying a Computer Speaker in the $280 range.

The Audioengine HD3 has done great in quite a few roundups from some of the most highly trusted sources available, such as SoundGuys, Wirecutter (NYTimes), PCmag, and Laptop Mag, which perform high-quality in-depth testing. It got awarded the "Best wireless" title by SoundGuys, "Upgrade pick" by Wirecutter (NYTimes), and "Best for More Affordable Audioengine Speakers" by PCmag in their respective roundups. Earning that much praise from such respected sources is undoubtedly an impressive accomplishment.

Taking a look at the Edifier R2000DB, it got featured in roundups from two reliable sources that conduct their own testing - Head-fi and Wirecutter (NYTimes) - but it fell short of earning a top spot in either.

We conducted an analysis of all of the review data that we could find on these two products. First, we focused on sources that tested and rated both of them, like Head-fi, and learned that they all showed a preference for the Edifier R2000DB.

Then we took a look at the highest review scores that these two Computer Speakers received. We found that the Audioengine HD3 managed to earn a rating of 9.2 from SoundGuys, whereas the Edifier R2000DB got its highest, 9, score from reviewers at Head-fi.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Computer Speakers on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Computer Speakers being 7.7 out of 10, whereas the Audioengine HD3 and Edifier R2000DB managed averages of 8.4 and 9.0 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Audioengine HD3 vs. Edifier R2000DB comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
