Etymotic ER4 (2016) vs KZ ZS3
The KZ ZS3 makes for a good, if unremarkable, Canal Earphone for people with a $10 budget.
The Etymotic ER4XR, however, is merely mediocre at its $299 asking price, when compared to similarly priced products, and won't satisfy the needs of most people.
In either case, we suggest that you first take a look at some other options at the $10 and $260 price points before committing to one of these - it's likely that you'll be able to find some better alternatives.
If you're still interested in learning more about the KZ ZS3 and Etymotic ER4XR, however, we wrote a summary of what we could find about them:
The reviewers at Head-fi have featured the KZ ZS3 in their KZ-ZS3 Hifi High-End 3.5mm In-Ear Earphone Headphones Earpiece Original Headset Bass Earbuds With Microphone review roundup. However, it fell short of making it to the top of their list.
As for the Etymotic ER4XR, it was really well-received by reviewers at PCmag, a reliable source that's known for conducting its own, high-quality, in-depth testing. It performed great in its "The Best Wired Headphones for 2020" roundup and was named its "Best for Sound Professionals", which, on its own, makes it a product that warrants a closer look.
We examined all of the review data that we could find and first took a look at sources that reviewed both of them, like Head-fi, and found that they haven't shown a preference for either product.
Then we checked which sources liked these two Canal Earphones best and found that the KZ ZS3 got its highest, 9, review score from reviewers at Head-fi, whereas the Etymotic ER4XR earned its best score of 10 from PCmag.
Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Canal Earphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Canal Earphones being 7.4 out of 10, whereas the KZ ZS3 and Etymotic ER4XR managed averages of 9.0 and 8.5 points, respectively.
Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct KZ ZS3 vs. Etymotic ER4XR comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
