Etymotic ER4 (2016) vs MEE audio M6 2nd gen

Analysis:

The Etymotic ER4XR makes for a good, if unremarkable, In-Ear Monitor for people with a $320 budget.

The MEE audio M6 PRO 2nd gen, however, is merely mediocre at its $39 asking price, when compared to similarly priced products, and won't satisfy the needs of most people.

In either case, we suggest that you first take a look at some other options at the $320 and $20 price points before committing to one of these - it's likely that you'll be able to find some better alternatives.

If you're still interested in learning more about the Etymotic ER4XR and MEE audio M6 PRO 2nd gen, however, we wrote a summary of what we could find about them:

The Etymotic ER4XR was loved by reviewers at PCmag, a highly trusted source that performs reliable in-depth testing. It did great in its "The Best Wired Headphones for 2020" roundup where it was named its "Best for Sound Professionals", which, in itself, makes it a product worth considering.

As for the MEE audio M6 PRO 2nd gen, it wasn't able to earn a top spot in any roundups from trusted sources that conduct their own hands-on testing. Nevertheless, it managed to impress reviewers at Head-fi, What Hi-Fi?, and Wirecutter (NYTimes) enough to make it onto their respective shortlists.

To get a better idea of how they fare when compared directly to each other, we analyzed review scores of sources that tested both. What Hi-Fi?, for example, preferred the Etymotic ER4XR, while Head-fi rated both of them the same.

We also took a look at which sources had the best things to say about them. We learned that the Etymotic ER4XR got reviewed the highest by PCmag - it gave it a rating of 10, while the MEE audio M6 PRO 2nd gen most impressed reviewers at Head-fi, which gave it a score of 9.

Lastly, we averaged out all of their review ratings and observed that the Etymotic ER4XR, with its 8.6 average, performed considerably better than most In-Ear Monitors - the mean score for the product category being 7.7 out of 10 - while the MEE audio M6 PRO 2nd gen managed an average of 7.5.

There's one caveat here - it might not be entirely justifiable to do a direct Etymotic ER4XR vs. MEE audio M6 PRO 2nd gen review average comparison since they aren't priced the same and more expensive products tend to get higher review scores from some sources.
