Etymotic ER4 (2016) vs Sony MDR-XB50AP

Analysis:

The Sony MDR-XB50AP makes for a good, if unremarkable, Canal Earphone for people with a $35 budget.

The Etymotic ER4XR, however, is merely mediocre at its $299 asking price, when compared to similarly priced products, and won't satisfy the needs of most people.

In either case, we suggest that you first take a look at some other options at the $35 and $290 price points before committing to one of these - it's likely that you'll be able to find some better alternatives.

If you're still interested in learning more about the Sony MDR-XB50AP and Etymotic ER4XR, however, we wrote a summary of what we could find about them:

The Sony MDR-XB50AP was loved by reviewers at Tom's Guide, a highly trusted source that performs reliable in-depth testing. It did great in its "The best cheap earbuds in 2020" roundup where it was named its "Sony sound at an unbeatable value", which, in itself, makes it a product worth considering.

Returning to the Etymotic ER4XR, PCmag, a source that's known for its high-quality in-depth testing, has great things to say about it. In fact, it was named its "Best for Budget-Minded Sound Engineers" in its "The Best Studio Headphones for 2020" roundup, which is quite a feat.

We conducted an analysis of all of the review data that we could find on these two products. First, we focused on sources that tested and rated both of them, like Rtings, and learned that they all showed a preference for the Etymotic ER4XR.

Then we took a look at the highest review scores that these two Canal Earphones received. We found that the Sony MDR-XB50AP managed to earn a rating of 5.9 from Rtings, whereas the Etymotic ER4XR got its highest, 10, score from reviewers at PCmag.

Finally, we calculated their average review scores from all of the data we could find and compared those to Canal Earphones in general. It turns out that the Etymotic ER4XR, with its 8.7 average, got reviewed considerably better than most of its competition - the overall average for Canal Earphones being 7.4 out of 10 points - whereas the Sony MDR-XB50AP performed worse than most, with an average review score of 5.9.

However, it's worth pointing out that a direct Sony MDR-XB50AP vs. Etymotic ER4XR comparison might not be entirely fair, because some sources have a tendency of not taking value for money into account when reviewing products.
