Etymotic ER4 (2016) vs SoundMAGIC E11BT

Analysis:

The SoundMAGIC E11BT makes for a good, if unremarkable, Canal Earphone for people with a $55 budget.

The Etymotic ER4XR, however, is merely mediocre at its $299 asking price, when compared to similarly priced products, and won't satisfy the needs of most people.

In either case, we suggest that you first take a look at some other options at the $55 and $290 price points before committing to one of these - it's likely that you'll be able to find some better alternatives.

If you're still interested in learning more about the SoundMAGIC E11BT and Etymotic ER4XR, however, we wrote a summary of what we could find about them:

While the SoundMAGIC E11BT wasn't able to make it to the very top of any roundups from sources that perform quality hands-on testing, it still got featured in a large number of them. Tech Advisor, TrustedReviews, Techradar, Head-fi, What Hi-Fi?, and AVForums have all deemed it worthy of a place on their respective shortlists.

Returning to the Etymotic ER4XR, PCmag, a source that's known for its high-quality in-depth testing, has great things to say about it. In fact, it was named its "Best for Budget-Minded Sound Engineers" in its "The Best Studio Headphones for 2020" roundup, which is quite a feat.

We analyzed all of the review data that we could find on these two Canal Earphones. First, we examined sources that tested and scored both of these products - Head-fi favored the Etymotic ER4XR over the SoundMAGIC E11BT, whereas reviewers at What Hi-Fi? haven't shown a preference for either.

Then we took a look at which sources liked them the most - we found that the SoundMAGIC E11BT was best received by Tech Advisor - it gave it a score of 9, whereas the Etymotic ER4XR got its highest score of 10 from reviewers at PCmag.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Canal Earphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Canal Earphones being 7.4 out of 10, whereas the SoundMAGIC E11BT and Etymotic ER4XR managed averages of 8.5 and 8.7 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct SoundMAGIC E11BT vs. Etymotic ER4XR comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
