Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018) vs Google Pixel 2 / Pixel 2 XL (2017)

Analysis:

The Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018) is a great Smartphone for its $409 asking price.

The Google Pixel 2 (2017), however, while a reasonable product for $599, doesn't stack up against its competitors quite as well. If you're considering Smartphones in the $600 range, you might want to check out some better options.

While the Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018) wasn't able to make it to the very top of any roundups from sources that perform quality hands-on testing, it still got featured in a large number of them. Android Central, GSMArena, PCWorld, PhoneArena, AVForums, TechSpot, The Verge, Notebookcheck.net, CNET, Photography Blog, Techradar, TrustedReviews, PCmag, Expert Reviews, Tom's Guide, Reviewed, Android Authority, and SoundGuys have all deemed it worthy of a place on their respective shortlists.

Moving on to the Google Pixel 2 (2017): it has performed really well in a handful of roundups done by reliable sources that perform their own objective testing, like Techradar, Android Central, and Android Authority - it was awarded the "Best phone for photos" title by Techradar, "Best for updates" by Android Central, and "Ranked 1 out of 4" by Android Authority, which marks it as a worthy candidate.

Out of the sources that tested and rated both of these Smartphones, GSMArena and TechSpot preferred the Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018), whereas reviewers at WIRED, Photography Blog, and CNET liked the Google Pixel 2 (2017) better. Pocket-lint, Android Central, PhoneArena, Techradar, TrustedReviews, PCmag, Expert Reviews, and Digitaltrends gave them identical review scores.

We also took a look at which sources liked these products best - the highest Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018) rating came from What Hi-Fi?, whereas the Google Pixel 2 (2017) most impressed reviewers at WIRED; they earned scores of 10 and 9, respectively.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Smartphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Smartphones being 7.5 out of 10, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018) and Google Pixel 2 (2017) managed averages of 8.6 and 8.3 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018) vs. Google Pixel 2 (2017) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
