HP OfficeJet Pro 9000 Series (2019) vs Brother HL-3170 (2011)

The HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 is a great Home Printer for its $229 asking price.

The Brother HL-3170CDW, however, while a reasonable product for $669, doesn't stack up against its competitors quite as well. If you're considering Home Printers in the $600 range, you might want to check out some better options.

The HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 has done great in quite a few roundups from some of the most highly trusted sources available, such as Wirecutter (NYTimes), PCmag, and Rtings, which perform high-quality in-depth testing. It got awarded the "Top Pick" title by Wirecutter (NYTimes), "Best for Medium-Volume Small Offices" by PCmag, and "Best HP Printer For Family Use" by Rtings in their respective roundups. Earning that much praise from such respected sources is undoubtedly an impressive accomplishment.

As for the Brother HL-3170CDW, it wasn't able to earn a top spot in any roundups from trusted sources that conduct their own hands-on testing. Nevertheless, it managed to impress reviewers at CNET, PCmag, and PCWorld enough to make it onto their respective shortlists.

When we thoroughly analyzed their review scores, we learned that all of the sources that tested both Home Printers, including PCmag, preferred the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 over the Brother HL-3170CDW.

We also took a look at which sources they managed to impress the most. The HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 was liked best by Gadget Review, which gave it a score of 9.4, while the Brother HL-3170CDW got its highest, 7.9, score from CNET.

Lastly, we averaged out all of their review ratings and observed that the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015, with its 8.8 average, performed considerably better than most Home Printers - the mean score for the product category being 7.1 out of 10 - while the Brother HL-3170CDW managed an average of 7.0.
