Samsung 860 EVO Series SSDs vs Intel Optane Series 900P (2017)

Analysis:

The Samsung 860 Series EVO M.2 250GB makes for an outstanding Internal SSD at $49. The Intel Optane SSD 900P HHHL 280GB, however, while overall a good product for its asking price, doesn't quite manage to stand out from its competition - there are better Internal SSDs that can be found for around $330 available here.

The Samsung 860 Series EVO M.2 250GB has done really well in a number of roundups conducted by sources that perform their own hands-on testing, such as Windows Central, Tom's Hardware, Android Central, and Expert Reviews - it was awarded the "Top Pick" title by Windows Central, "Best Consumer SATA SSD" by Tom's Hardware, and "Best SATA SSD" by Android Central. That's high praise from reliable sources.

As for the Intel Optane SSD 900P HHHL 280GB - it impressed reviewers at Tom's Hardware, a trustworthy source that conducts solid hands-on testing. It did great in its "Best SSDs 2020: From Budget SATA to Blazing-Fast NVMe" roundup - in fact, it earned its "Best Low-Capacity Add-in-Card SSD" title, which, on its own, indicates a certain level of quality.

We conducted an analysis of all of the review data that we could find on these two products. First, we focused on sources that tested and rated both of them, like PC Gamer and PCWorld, and learned that they all showed a preference for the Intel Optane SSD 900P HHHL 280GB.

Then we took a look at the highest review scores that these two Internal SSDs received. We found that the Samsung 860 Series EVO M.2 250GB managed to earn a rating of 10 from Expert Reviews, whereas the Intel Optane SSD 900P HHHL 280GB got its highest, 9.2, score from reviewers at PC Gamer.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Internal SSDs on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Internal SSDs being 7.8 out of 10, whereas the Samsung 860 Series EVO M.2 250GB and Intel Optane SSD 900P HHHL 280GB managed averages of 8.8 and 8.6 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Samsung 860 Series EVO M.2 250GB vs. Intel Optane SSD 900P HHHL 280GB comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
