Microsoft Surface Book 2 vs Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme 2nd Gen (2019)

Analysis:

The Microsoft Surface Book 2 (13.5") Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 1TB is one of the very best Traditional Laptops that one can get for around $2,100. The Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme 2nd Gen i7-9750H, 32GB RAM, 1TB PCIe-NVMe SSD (2019), however, while a very good choice at its $1,600 price point, falls just short of being remarkable.

Two highly trusted sources that perform well-thought-out in-depth testing consider the Microsoft Surface Book 2 (13.5") Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 1TB to be a great product - it earned the "Best for Power Users, Creative Professionals" title from PCmag and "Most versatile video editing laptop" from Laptop Mag in their respective Traditional Laptop roundups, which is a good indication of it being a notable product.

As for the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme 2nd Gen i7-9750H, 32GB RAM, 1TB PCIe-NVMe SSD (2019) - it was received really well by reviewers from a couple of highly trusted sources, such as Laptop Mag, PCmag, and Wirecutter (NYTimes); it performed great in their in-depth hands-on roundups and earned the "The best multimedia laptop" title from Laptop Mag, "Best for Content Creators, Multimedia Pros" from PCmag, and "Ranked 3 out of 8" from Wirecutter (NYTimes), which indicates that this product is worthy of consideration.

To get a better idea of how they fare when compared directly to each other, we analyzed review scores of sources that tested both. PCWorld, for example, preferred the Microsoft Surface Book 2 (13.5") Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 1TB, while Laptop Mag, PCmag, and Digitaltrends rated both of them the same.

We also took a look at which sources had the best things to say about them. We learned that the Microsoft Surface Book 2 (13.5") Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 1TB got reviewed the highest by T3 - it gave it a rating of 10, while the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme 2nd Gen i7-9750H, 32GB RAM, 1TB PCIe-NVMe SSD (2019) most impressed reviewers at Notebookcheck.net, which gave it a score of 8.7.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Traditional Laptops on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Traditional Laptops being 7.6 out of 10, whereas the Microsoft Surface Book 2 (13.5") Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 1TB and Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme 2nd Gen i7-9750H, 32GB RAM, 1TB PCIe-NVMe SSD (2019) managed averages of 8.3 and 7.9 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Microsoft Surface Book 2 (13.5") Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 1TB vs. Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme 2nd Gen i7-9750H, 32GB RAM, 1TB PCIe-NVMe SSD (2019) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
