Monoprice Monolith M565 (2018) vs beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (1985)

Analysis:

The Monoprice Monolith M565C (2018) is a great Closed-Back Headphone for its $199 asking price.

The beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (1985), however, while a reasonable product for $139, doesn't stack up against its competitors quite as well. If you're considering Closed-Back Headphones in the $100 range, you might want to check out some better options.

The Monoprice Monolith M565C (2018) has impressed reviewers from two sources that are among the most highly trusted on the internet, namely Wirecutter and Wirecutter (NYTimes). It did great in their objective hands-on roundups - it earned the "Top Pick" and "Top Pick" awards from Wirecutter and Wirecutter (NYTimes), respectively. That's high praise from such reputable sources.

Returning to the beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (1985), PCmag, a source that's known for its high-quality in-depth testing, has great things to say about it. In fact, it was named its "Best for Budget-Minded Audiophiles" in its "The Best Audiophile Headphones for 2020" roundup, which is quite a feat.

We examined all of the review data that we could find and first took a look at sources that reviewed both of them, like Head-fi, and found that they haven't shown a preference for either product.

Then we checked which sources liked these two Closed-Back Headphones best and found that the Monoprice Monolith M565C (2018) got its highest, 10, review score from reviewers at Head-fi, whereas the beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (1985) earned its best score of 10 from Head-fi.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Closed-Back Headphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Closed-Back Headphones being 7.4 out of 10, whereas the Monoprice Monolith M565C (2018) and beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (1985) managed averages of 9.4 and 7.8 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Monoprice Monolith M565C (2018) vs. beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (1985) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
