Moto Z4 (2019) vs Samsung Galaxy S8 (2017)
While the Moto Z4 (2019) wasn't able to make it to the very top of any roundups from sources that perform quality hands-on testing, it still got featured in a large number of them. PhoneArena, CNET, Tom's Guide, PCmag, Techradar, and Android Authority have all deemed it worthy of a place on their respective shortlists.
Moving on to the Samsung Galaxy S8 (2017): it was well-received by reviewers from numerous sources that perform their own objective hands-on testing, including Techradar, MakeUseOf, Android Central, GadgetMatch, The Verge, Gear Patrol, and Popular Mechanics. It did great in their roundups - it was named "Best Samsung phone battery" by Techradar, "Ranked 2 out of 5" by MakeUseOf, and "Ranked 1 out of 3" by Android Central. That alone points toward it being worthy of consideration.
We analyzed all of the review data that we could find on these two Smartphones. First, we examined sources that tested and scored both of these products - Tom's Guide, PCmag, Techradar, and CNET favored the Samsung Galaxy S8 (2017) over the Moto Z4 (2019), whereas reviewers at PhoneArena haven't shown a preference for either.
Then we took a look at which sources liked them the most - we found that the Moto Z4 (2019) was best received by PhoneArena - it gave it a score of 9, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S8 (2017) got its highest score of 10 from reviewers at Expert Reviews.
Lastly, in order to better compare them to the rest of their competition, we averaged out their review scores. The Samsung Galaxy S8 (2017) managed to get 8.8 out of 10 - considerably better than the 7.5 review average of Smartphones in general - whereas the Moto Z4 (2019) earned 7.2 points.
It should be said that doing a direct Moto Z4 (2019) vs. Samsung Galaxy S8 (2017) comparison might not be entirely fair due to the difference in their prices - some sources don't put much weight on value for money and thus tend to give better review scores to more expensive products.
