Olympus OM-D E-M10 Cameras (2017) vs Sony α9 Mirrorless Cameras (2019)

Analysis:

The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III (2017) and Sony α9 II (2019) are both excellent choices at their respective budgets. The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III (2017) is among the very best Mirrorless Cameras for $449 and the Sony α9 II (2019) is exemplary at $4498. Depending on how much you're willing to spend, you can't go wrong with either option.

The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III (2017) impressed reviewers from many sources that have a history of conducting objective testing, such as Wirecutter (NYTimes), Expert Reviews, Techradar, Digital Camera World, shotkit.com, Digital Photography Review, and camerajabber.com. It performed really well in their roundups - it was awarded the"Top Pick" title from Wirecutter (NYTimes), "Best for long zoom shots" from Expert Reviews, and "This travel-friendly mirrorless all-rounder now offers superb value" from Techradar. That's high praise coming from numerous reliable sources.

Returning to the Sony α9 II (2019), PCmag, a source that's known for its high-quality in-depth testing, has great things to say about it. In fact, it was named its "Best for Blackout-Free Shooting at 20fps" in its "The Best Full-Frame Cameras for 2020" roundup, which is quite a feat.

We conducted an analysis of all of the review data that we could find on these two products. First, we focused on sources that tested and rated both of them, like Techradar, Digital Photography Review, and PCmag, and learned that they all showed a preference for the Sony α9 II (2019).

Then we took a look at the highest review scores that these two Mirrorless Cameras received. We found that the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III (2017) managed to earn a rating of 10 from Digital Camera World, whereas the Sony α9 II (2019) got its highest, 10, score from reviewers at Techradar.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Mirrorless Cameras on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Mirrorless Cameras being 7.9 out of 10, whereas the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III (2017) and Sony α9 II (2019) managed averages of 8.4 and 9.3 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III (2017) vs. Sony α9 II (2019) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
