Panasonic Lumix G_ series Cameras (2017) vs Olympus OM-D E-M5 Cameras (2015)

Analysis:

The Panasonic Lumix DC-G9 (2017) is a great Mirrorless Camera for its $997 asking price.

The Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II (2015), however, while a reasonable product for $549, doesn't stack up against its competitors quite as well. If you're considering Mirrorless Cameras in the $490 range, you might want to check out some better options.

The Panasonic Lumix DC-G9 (2017) has managed to impress reviewers from two reliable and objective sources that conduct their own testing, namely Techradar, Expert Reviews, and Digital Camera World. It did great in their roundups - it earned the "A versatile all-rounder that now offers great value" title from Techradar, and "Best for filmmakers" from Expert Reviews, which marks it as a product that's worth considering.

Returning to the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II (2015), Tom's Guide, a source that's known for its high-quality in-depth testing, has great things to say about it. In fact, it was named its "Weatherproof seals make this a good mirrorless camera for the outdoors." in its "Best mirrorless cameras in 2020" roundup, which is quite a feat.

To get a better idea of how they fare when compared directly to each other, we analyzed review scores of sources that tested both. Pocket-lint, Digital Camera World, and Digital Photography Review, for example, preferred the Panasonic Lumix DC-G9 (2017), while Techradar, Digitaltrends, and TrustedReviews rated both of them the same.

We also took a look at which sources had the best things to say about them. We learned that the Panasonic Lumix DC-G9 (2017) got reviewed the highest by camerajabber.com - it gave it a rating of 10, while the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II (2015) most impressed reviewers at The Phoblographer, which gave it a score of 10.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Mirrorless Cameras on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Mirrorless Cameras being 7.9 out of 10, whereas the Panasonic Lumix DC-G9 (2017) and Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II (2015) managed averages of 9.2 and 8.9 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Panasonic Lumix DC-G9 (2017) vs. Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II (2015) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
