Sony α6x00 (Mid-range APS-C) Mirrorless Cameras (2014) vs Panasonic Lumix G__ series Cameras (2017)

Analysis:

The Sony α6000 (2014) is an exemplary product and one of the very best Mirrorless Cameras at the $500 budget.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85 (2017), however, doesn't seem to have enough data available for us to be able to draw any meaningful conclusions.

While the Sony α6000 (2014) wasn't able to make it to the very top of any roundups from sources that perform quality hands-on testing, it still got featured in a large number of them. shotkit.com, Photography Blog, Digital Camera World, PCmag, CNET, DXOMARK, Digital Photography Review, Expert Reviews, Techradar, camerajabber.com, and The Phoblographer have all deemed it worthy of a place on their respective shortlists.

As for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85 (2017), it was really well-received by reviewers at Wirecutter (NYTimes), a reliable source that's known for conducting its own, high-quality, in-depth testing. It performed great in its "For All-Star Kids Sports Photos, Ditch Your Smartphone" roundup and was named its "Midrange excellence", which, on its own, makes it a product that warrants a closer look.

When we thoroughly analyzed their review scores, we learned that all of the sources that tested both Mirrorless Cameras, including Photography Blog and DXOMARK, preferred the Sony α6000 (2014) over the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85 (2017).

We also took a look at which sources they managed to impress the most. The Sony α6000 (2014) was liked best by Photography Blog, which gave it a score of 10, while the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85 (2017) got its highest, 9, score from Pocket-lint.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Mirrorless Cameras on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Mirrorless Cameras being 7.9 out of 10, whereas the Sony α6000 (2014) and Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85 (2017) managed averages of 9.0 and 8.5 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Sony α6000 (2014) vs. Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85 (2017) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
