Sony α7R Mirrorless Cameras (2019) vs Panasonic Lumix G__ series Cameras (2017)

Analysis:

The Sony α7R IV (2019) is one of the very best Mirrorless Cameras that one can get for around $3,400. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85 (2017), however, while a very good choice at its $440 price point, falls just short of being remarkable.

The Sony α7R IV (2019) was loved by reviewers at PCmag, a highly trusted source that performs reliable in-depth testing. It did great in its "The Best Digital Cameras for 2020" roundup where it was named its "Best for 10fps Capture at 60MP", which, in itself, makes it a product worth considering.

As for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85 (2017) - it was really well-received by reviewers at Wirecutter (NYTimes), a great source that's known for conducting high-quality in-depth testing. It performed great in its "For All-Star Kids Sports Photos, Ditch Your Smartphone" roundup and was named its "Midrange excellence", which, on its own, makes it a product that warrants a closer look.

Out of the sources that tested and rated both of these Mirrorless Cameras, DXOMARK preferred the Sony α7R IV (2019), whereas reviewers at Pocket-lint liked the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85 (2017) better. Techradar gave them identical review scores.

We also took a look at which sources liked these products best - the highest Sony α7R IV (2019) rating came from PCmag, whereas the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85 (2017) most impressed reviewers at Pocket-lint; they earned scores of 10 and 9, respectively.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Mirrorless Cameras on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Mirrorless Cameras being 7.9 out of 10, whereas the Sony α7R IV (2019) and Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85 (2017) managed averages of 9.0 and 8.4 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Sony α7R IV (2019) vs. Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85 (2017) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
