Samsung 850 EVO Series SSDs vs Intel Optane Series 900P (2017)

Analysis:

The Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" 500GB is a great Internal SSD for its $149 asking price.

The Intel Optane SSD 900P U.2 280GB, however, while a reasonable product for $421, doesn't stack up against its competitors quite as well. If you're considering Internal SSDs in the $370 range, you might want to check out some better options.

While the Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" 500GB wasn't able to make it to the very top of any roundups from sources that perform quality hands-on testing, it still got featured in a large number of them. TrustedReviews, Techradar, CNET, TechSpot, PC Gamer, Expert Reviews, PCmag, PCWorld, Reviewed, and Laptop Mag have all deemed it worthy of a place on their respective shortlists.

As for the Intel Optane SSD 900P U.2 280GB analysis - it impressed reviewers at Tom's Hardware, a source that's known for its objective testing and well-thought-out methodology - it performed great in its "Best SSDs 2020: From Budget SATA to Blazing-Fast NVMe" roundup and earned the "Best Low-Capacity Add-in-Card SSD" title.

We analyzed all of the review data that we could find on these two Internal SSDs. First, we examined sources that tested and scored both of these products - PC Gamer and PCWorld favored the Intel Optane SSD 900P U.2 280GB over the Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" 500GB, whereas reviewers at PCmag haven't shown a preference for either.

Then we took a look at which sources liked them the most - we found that the Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" 500GB was best received by TrustedReviews - it gave it a score of 9, whereas the Intel Optane SSD 900P U.2 280GB got its highest score of 9.2 from reviewers at PC Gamer.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Internal SSDs on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Internal SSDs being 7.8 out of 10, whereas the Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" 500GB and Intel Optane SSD 900P U.2 280GB managed averages of 8.4 and 8.6 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" 500GB vs. Intel Optane SSD 900P U.2 280GB comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
