Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (2004) vs Audio-Technica ATH-M20x (2014)

Analysis:

The Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (2004) and Audio-Technica ATH-M20x (2014) make for very strong choices and are great Closed-Back Headphones for their respective $99 and $49 asking prices. Depending on how much you're willing to spend, either of these options will serve you well.

The Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (2004) has managed to impress reviewers from some of the most highly trusted sources on the internet, including SoundGuys and PCmag. It performed great in their in-depth hands-on roundups - it was awarded the "Best bang for your buck" title by SoundGuys and "Best for Inexpensive Mastering" by PCmag in their respective Closed-Back Headphone roundups. That's high praise, especially when coming from such high-quality sources.

As for the Audio-Technica ATH-M20x (2014), it was really well-received by reviewers at Rtings, a reliable source that's known for conducting its own, high-quality, in-depth testing. It performed great in its "The 5 Best DJ Headphones - Summer 2020" roundup and was named its "Best Budget DJ Headphones", which, on its own, makes it a product that warrants a closer look.

We conducted an analysis of all of the review data that we could find on these two products. First, we focused on sources that tested and rated both of them, like Rtings, and learned that they all showed a preference for the Audio-Technica ATH-M20x (2014).

Then we took a look at the highest review scores that these two Closed-Back Headphones received. We found that the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (2004) managed to earn a rating of 9 from PCmag, whereas the Audio-Technica ATH-M20x (2014) got its highest, 5.2, score from reviewers at Rtings.

Lastly, we compared their average review performance to that of the rest of their competition and found that neither option got received particularly well. With an average rating of 7.2 out of 10, the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (2004) performed similarly to most other Closed-Back Headphones on the market - the overall average review score for this product category being 7.4 - while the Audio-Technica ATH-M20x (2014) did worse than most, with its average of 5.2 points.

There's one caveat here - a direct Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (2004) vs. Audio-Technica ATH-M20x (2014) comparison might not be entirely justifiable due to the difference in their pricing and the fact that some sources tend to give lower ratings to cheaper products because they don't take value for money into account.
