Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) vs Shure SRH1840 (2011)

Analysis:

The Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) is a great Over-Ear Headphone for its $189 asking price.

The Shure SRH1840 (2011), however, is merely passable at its $499 price point. If you're considering buying a Over-Ear Headphone in the $530 range, you might want to check out some of its competitors.

The Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) was loved by reviewers at Tom's Guide, a highly trusted source that performs reliable in-depth testing. It did great in its "Best Bose Headphones 2020" roundup where it was named its "Excellent noise cancellation for cheap", which, in itself, makes it a product worth considering.

As for the Shure SRH1840 (2011), it wasn't able to earn a top spot in any roundups from trusted sources that conduct their own hands-on testing. Nevertheless, it managed to impress reviewers at What Hi-Fi?, Head-fi, CNET, and Wirecutter (NYTimes) enough to make it onto their respective shortlists.

Out of the sources that tested and rated both of these Over-Ear Headphones, CNET preferred the Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014), whereas reviewers at Head-fi liked the Shure SRH1840 (2011) better. What Hi-Fi? gave them identical review scores.

We also took a look at which sources liked these products best - the highest Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) rating came from Tom's Guide, whereas the Shure SRH1840 (2011) most impressed reviewers at What Hi-Fi?; they earned scores of 10 and 10, respectively.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Over-Ear Headphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Over-Ear Headphones being 7.5 out of 10, whereas the Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) and Shure SRH1840 (2011) managed averages of 8.7 and 8.9 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Bose QuietComfort 25 (2014) vs. Shure SRH1840 (2011) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
