Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 / HD1 Over-Ear (2015) vs Shure SRH1840 (2011)

Analysis:

The Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 / HD1 Wireless Over-Ear (2015) is an exemplary product and sets the bar for all other Over-Ear Headphones at the $180 budget.

The Shure SRH1840 (2011), however, is merely passable for its price. We suggest taking a look at some better options if you're considering buying a Over-Ear Headphone in the $530 range.

The Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 / HD1 Wireless Over-Ear (2015) was loved by reviewers at TechSpot, a trustworthy source that performs objective hands-on testing. It did great in their "The Best Headphones 2020" roundup - in fact, they named it their "Best Wired (Closed Back)". That, by itself, points toward it being a noteworthy Over-Ear Headphone.

As for the Shure SRH1840 (2011), it wasn't able to earn a top spot in any roundups from trusted sources that conduct their own hands-on testing. Nevertheless, it managed to impress reviewers at What Hi-Fi?, Head-fi, CNET, and Wirecutter (NYTimes) enough to make it onto their respective shortlists.

We examined all of the review data that we could find and first took a look at sources that reviewed both of them, like What Hi-Fi?, and found that they haven't shown a preference for either product.

Then we checked which sources liked these two Over-Ear Headphones best and found that the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 / HD1 Wireless Over-Ear (2015) got its highest, 10, review score from reviewers at What Hi-Fi?, whereas the Shure SRH1840 (2011) earned its best score of 10 from What Hi-Fi?.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Over-Ear Headphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Over-Ear Headphones being 7.5 out of 10, whereas the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 / HD1 Wireless Over-Ear (2015) and Shure SRH1840 (2011) managed averages of 8.3 and 8.9 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 / HD1 Wireless Over-Ear (2015) vs. Shure SRH1840 (2011) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
