Sony α6x00 (Advanced APS-C) Mirrorless Cameras (2019) vs Sony α9 Mirrorless Cameras (2017)

Analysis:

The Sony α6600 (2019) and Sony α9 (2017) make for very strong choices and are great Mirrorless Cameras for their respective $1398 and $3498 asking prices. Depending on how much you're willing to spend, either of these options will serve you well.

The Sony α6600 (2019) was loved by reviewers at Digital Photography Review, a trustworthy source that performs objective hands-on testing. It did great in their "Best cameras for portraits" roundup - in fact, they named it their "Best for amateurs". That, by itself, points toward it being a noteworthy Mirrorless Camera.

As for the Sony α9 (2017) - it was really well-received by reviewers at PCmag, a great source that's known for conducting high-quality in-depth testing. It performed great in its "The Best Full-Frame Cameras for 2020" roundup and was named its "Best for Blackout-Free Shooting at 20fps", which, on its own, makes it a product that warrants a closer look.

We conducted an analysis of all of the review data that we could find on these two products. First, we focused on sources that tested and rated both of them, like Techradar, Digital Camera World, DXOMARK, and PCmag, and learned that they all showed a preference for the Sony α9 (2017).

Then we took a look at the highest review scores that these two Mirrorless Cameras received. We found that the Sony α6600 (2019) managed to earn a rating of 9 from Pocket-lint, whereas the Sony α9 (2017) got its highest, 10, score from reviewers at Expert Reviews.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Mirrorless Cameras on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Mirrorless Cameras being 7.9 out of 10, whereas the Sony α6600 (2019) and Sony α9 (2017) managed averages of 8.2 and 9.5 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Sony α6600 (2019) vs. Sony α9 (2017) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
