Olympus OM-D E-M10 Cameras (2017) vs Sony α7 Mirrorless Cameras (2014)

Analysis:

The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III (2017) is one of the very best Mirrorless Cameras that one can get for around $500. The Sony α7 II (2014), however, while a very good choice at its $1,300 price point, falls just short of being remarkable.

The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III (2017) has managed to impress reviewers from two reliable and objective sources that conduct their own testing, namely Wirecutter (NYTimes), Expert Reviews, Digital Camera World, shotkit.com, Digital Photography Review, and camerajabber.com. It did great in their roundups - it earned the "Top Pick" title from Wirecutter (NYTimes), and "Best for long zoom shots" from Expert Reviews, which marks it as a product that's worth considering.

Moving on to the Sony α7 II (2014): it was loved by CNET and PCmag - two reliable sources that conduct their own in-depth testing. In fact, it was named "Best camera for the aspirant" and "Best for Future Pros" in their respective roundups, which points to it being a product worthy of consideration.

Out of the sources that tested and rated both of these Mirrorless Cameras, Digital Camera World preferred the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III (2017), whereas reviewers at Photography Blog, Pocket-lint, PCmag, and Digital Photography Review liked the Sony α7 II (2014) better. Techradar gave them identical review scores.

We also took a look at which sources liked these products best - the highest Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III (2017) rating came from Digital Camera World, whereas the Sony α7 II (2014) most impressed reviewers at Photography Blog; they earned scores of 10 and 10, respectively.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Mirrorless Cameras on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Mirrorless Cameras being 7.9 out of 10, whereas the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III (2017) and Sony α7 II (2014) managed averages of 8.7 and 8.6 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III (2017) vs. Sony α7 II (2014) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
