Sony α7 Mirrorless Cameras (2014) vs Sony α9 Mirrorless Cameras (2017)

Analysis:

The Sony α7 II (2014) and Sony α9 (2017) make for very strong choices and are great Mirrorless Cameras for their respective $1398 and $2999 asking prices. Depending on how much you're willing to spend, either of these options will serve you well.

The Sony α7 II (2014) has managed to impress reviewers from two reliable and objective sources that conduct their own testing, namely CNET, PCmag, and Digital Camera World. It did great in their roundups - it earned the "Best camera for the aspirant" title from CNET, and "Best for Future Pros" from PCmag, which marks it as a product that's worth considering.

Moving on to the Sony α9 (2017): it was unable to reach the very top of any roundups from sources that conduct reliable and unbiased testing. Nonetheless, it still managed to impress reviewers from a number of such sites, like Photography Blog, Expert Reviews, Techradar, camerajabber.com, Digital Camera World, DXOMARK, hardwarezone.com.sg, PCmag, shotkit.com, and Reviewed, enough for them to include them on those lists.

Out of the sources that tested and rated both of these Mirrorless Cameras, Gadget Review preferred the Sony α7 II (2014), whereas reviewers at Techradar, Digital Camera World, and DXOMARK liked the Sony α9 (2017) better. Photography Blog and PCmag gave them identical review scores.

We also took a look at which sources liked these products best - the highest Sony α7 II (2014) rating came from Photography Blog, whereas the Sony α9 (2017) most impressed reviewers at Photography Blog; they earned scores of 10 and 10, respectively.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Mirrorless Cameras on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Mirrorless Cameras being 7.9 out of 10, whereas the Sony α7 II (2014) and Sony α9 (2017) managed averages of 8.6 and 9.3 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Sony α7 II (2014) vs. Sony α9 (2017) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
