Sony α7 Mirrorless Cameras (2018) vs Olympus OM-D E-M10 Cameras (2015)

Analysis:

The Sony α7 III (2018) makes for an outstanding Mirrorless Camera at $1998. The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II (2015), however, while overall a good product for its asking price, doesn't quite manage to stand out from its competition - there are better Mirrorless Cameras that can be found for around $400 available here.

The Sony α7 III (2018) has impressed reviewers from two sources that are among the most highly trusted on the internet, namely PCmag and Wirecutter. It did great in their objective hands-on roundups - it earned the "Best for Full-Frame Mirrorless" and "Also great" awards from PCmag and Wirecutter, respectively. That's high praise from such reputable sources.

As for the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II (2015) - it impressed reviewers at The Verge, a trustworthy source that conducts solid hands-on testing. It did great in its "The best mirrorless camera you can buy for $1,000" roundup - in fact, it earned its "Ranked 2 out of 8" title, which, on its own, indicates a certain level of quality.

To get a better idea of how they fare when compared directly to each other, we analyzed review scores of sources that tested both. Digital Camera World, PCmag, Techradar, and DXOMARK, for example, preferred the Sony α7 III (2018), while Photography Blog and Digitaltrends rated both of them the same.

We also took a look at which sources had the best things to say about them. We learned that the Sony α7 III (2018) got reviewed the highest by Digital Camera World - it gave it a rating of 10, while the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II (2015) most impressed reviewers at Photography Blog, which gave it a score of 10.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Mirrorless Cameras on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Mirrorless Cameras being 7.9 out of 10, whereas the Sony α7 III (2018) and Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II (2015) managed averages of 9.4 and 8.6 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Sony α7 III (2018) vs. Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II (2015) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
