Sony α9 Mirrorless Cameras (2019) vs Sony α7R Mirrorless Cameras (2015)

Analysis:

The Sony α9 II (2019) is one of the very best Mirrorless Cameras that one can get for around $4,700. The Sony α7R II (2015), however, while a very good choice at its $1,300 price point, falls just short of being remarkable.

The Sony α9 II (2019) was loved by reviewers at PCmag, a highly trusted source that performs reliable in-depth testing. It did great in its "The Best Full-Frame Cameras for 2020" roundup where it was named its "Best for Blackout-Free Shooting at 20fps", which, in itself, makes it a product worth considering.

Moving on to the Sony α7R II (2015): it was loved by reviewers at Reviewed and Gear Patrol - two reliable sources that conduct objective in-depth testing. In fact, it was their "Top Pick" and "Ranked 2 out of 4", respectively, pointing towards it being a Mirrorless Camera worth considering.

Out of the sources that tested and rated both of these Mirrorless Cameras, PCmag preferred the Sony α9 II (2019), whereas reviewers at DXOMARK liked the Sony α7R II (2015) better. Techradar and Digital Photography Review gave them identical review scores.

We also took a look at which sources liked these products best - the highest Sony α9 II (2019) rating came from Techradar, whereas the Sony α7R II (2015) most impressed reviewers at Photography Blog; they earned scores of 10 and 10, respectively.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Mirrorless Cameras on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Mirrorless Cameras being 7.9 out of 10, whereas the Sony α9 II (2019) and Sony α7R II (2015) managed averages of 9.3 and 9.1 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Sony α9 II (2019) vs. Sony α7R II (2015) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
