Panasonic DP-UB420 vs Sony BDP-S1700 (2016)

The Panasonic DP-UB420 makes for an outstanding Blu-ray Player at $219. The Sony BDP-S1700 (2016), however, while overall a good product for its asking price, doesn't quite manage to stand out from its competition - there are better Blu-ray Players that can be found for around $75 available here.

The Panasonic DP-UB420 was loved by reviewers at Wirecutter, a highly trusted source that performs reliable in-depth testing. It did great in its "The Best Gear for Building Your Home Theater" roundup where it was named its "The best 4K player for all of your video discs", which, in itself, makes it a product worth considering.

Returning to the Sony BDP-S1700 (2016), Wirecutter, a source that's known for its high-quality in-depth testing, has great things to say about it. In fact, it was named its "Ranked 3 out of 3" in its "The Best 4K Blu-ray Player" roundup, which is quite a feat.

We couldn't find any sources that tested both of these Blu-ray Players, so we only analyzed how they performed in reviews from different sites.

We first examined which sources rated each of these best and found that the Panasonic DP-UB420 got its highest, 8, rating from Techradar, while the Sony BDP-S1700 (2016) earned its best, 8, score from Digitaltrends.

Finally, we compared them to other Blu-ray Players on the market and found that the two of them got reviewed similarly to the majority of their competitors. The overall average review score for Blu-ray Players in general is 8.1 out of 10, whereas the Panasonic DP-UB420 and Sony BDP-S1700 (2016) managed averages of 8.0 and 8.0 points, respectively.
