Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) vs beyerdynamic DT880

Analysis:

The Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) and beyerdynamic DT880 Pro make for very strong choices and are great Over-Ear Headphones for their respective $279 and $229 asking prices. Depending on how much you're willing to spend, either of these options will serve you well.

The Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) got praised by SoundGuys and Tom's Guide - two highly trusted sources that perform in-depth hands-on testing. It was awarded the "Best All-around" title from SoundGuys and "Great noise cancellation meets even greater sound" from Tom's Guide in their respective Over-Ear Headphone roundups.

Returning to the beyerdynamic DT880 Pro - it was really well-received by reviewers at SoundGuys and PCmag, which are among the most highly trusted sources on the internet and are known for their in-depth hands-on testing. It was named "Best for Mixing" by SoundGuys and "Best for Semi-Open Studio Sound" by PCmag, which points toward the beyerdynamic DT880 Pro being a high-quality product.

To get a better idea of how they fare when compared directly to each other, we analyzed review scores of sources that tested both. SoundGuys, for example, preferred the Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017), while Head-fi and PCmag rated both of them the same.

We also took a look at which sources had the best things to say about them. We learned that the Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) got reviewed the highest by Pocket-lint - it gave it a rating of 10, while the beyerdynamic DT880 Pro most impressed reviewers at Head-fi, which gave it a score of 10.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Over-Ear Headphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Over-Ear Headphones being 7.5 out of 10, whereas the Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) and beyerdynamic DT880 Pro managed averages of 8.9 and 8.6 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) vs. beyerdynamic DT880 Pro comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
