Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) vs Skullcandy Grind Wireless (2016)

Analysis:

The Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) is a great Closed-Back Headphone for its $279 asking price.

The Skullcandy Grind Wireless (2016), however, while a reasonable product for $38, doesn't stack up against its competitors quite as well. If you're considering Closed-Back Headphones in the $45 range, you might want to check out some better options.

The Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) has managed to impress reviewers from some of the most highly trusted sources on the internet, including SoundGuys and Tom's Guide. It performed great in their in-depth hands-on roundups - it was awarded the "Best All-around" title by SoundGuys and "The best headphones" by Techradar in their respective Closed-Back Headphone roundups. That's high praise, especially when coming from such high-quality sources.

As for the Skullcandy Grind Wireless (2016), it was really well-received by reviewers at Rtings, a reliable source that's known for conducting its own, high-quality, in-depth testing. It performed great in its "The 6 Best On-Ear Headphones - Spring 2020" roundup and was named its "Best Budget On-Ear Headphones", which, on its own, makes it a product that warrants a closer look.

To get a better idea of how they fare when compared directly to each other, we analyzed review scores of sources that tested both. Techradar, SoundGuys, CNET, and Rtings, for example, preferred the Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017), while PCmag rated both of them the same.

We also took a look at which sources had the best things to say about them. We learned that the Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) got reviewed the highest by TrustedReviews - it gave it a rating of 10, while the Skullcandy Grind Wireless (2016) most impressed reviewers at SoundGuys, which gave it a score of 8.2.

Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Closed-Back Headphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Closed-Back Headphones being 7.4 out of 10, whereas the Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) and Skullcandy Grind Wireless (2016) managed averages of 9.0 and 7.8 points, respectively.

Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Sony WH-1000XM2 (2017) vs. Skullcandy Grind Wireless (2016) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
