Sony WH-1000XM3 (2018) vs V-MODA Crossfade M-100 (2019)
The Sony WH-1000XM3 (2018) is an exemplary product and sets the bar for all other Closed-Back Headphones at the $230 budget.
The V-MODA Crossfade M-100 Master (2019), however, is merely passable for its price. We suggest taking a look at some better options if you're considering buying a Closed-Back Headphone in the $280 range.
The Sony WH-1000XM3 (2018) has done great in quite a few roundups from some of the most highly trusted sources available, such as Tom's Guide, Laptop Mag, CNET, and SoundGuys, which perform high-quality in-depth testing. It got awarded the "Best Sony headphones overall" title by Tom's Guide, "Excellent sound paired with great noise cancelling" by Laptop Mag, and "Best of previous generation" by CNET in their respective roundups. Earning that much praise from such respected sources is undoubtedly an impressive accomplishment.
Taking a look at the V-MODA Crossfade M-100 Master (2019), it got featured in roundups from two reliable sources that conduct their own testing - SoundGuys and Wirecutter (NYTimes) - but it fell short of earning a top spot in either.
To get a better idea of how they fare when compared directly to each other, we analyzed review scores of sources that tested both. Pocket-lint and SoundGuys, for example, preferred the Sony WH-1000XM3 (2018), while TechHive rated both of them the same.
We also took a look at which sources had the best things to say about them. We learned that the Sony WH-1000XM3 (2018) got reviewed the highest by Expert Reviews - it gave it a rating of 10, while the V-MODA Crossfade M-100 Master (2019) most impressed reviewers at TechHive, which gave it a score of 9.
Lastly, we averaged out all of the reviews scores that we could find on these two products and compared them to other Closed-Back Headphones on the market. We learned that both of them performed far better than most of their competitors - the overall review average earned by Closed-Back Headphones being 7.4 out of 10, whereas the Sony WH-1000XM3 (2018) and V-MODA Crossfade M-100 Master (2019) managed averages of 9.0 and 8.5 points, respectively.
Due to the difference in their prices, however, it's important to keep in mind that a direct Sony WH-1000XM3 (2018) vs. V-MODA Crossfade M-100 Master (2019) comparison might not be entirely fair - some sources don't take value for money into account when assigning their scores and therefore have a tendency to rate more premium products better.
