Sony Xperia (2019) vs Google Pixel 2 / Pixel 2 XL (2017)

Analysis:

The Sony Xperia 5 (2019) makes for a good, if unremarkable, Smartphone for people with a $860 budget.

The Google Pixel 2 (2017), however, is merely mediocre at its $599 asking price, when compared to similarly priced products, and won't satisfy the needs of most people.

In either case, we suggest that you first take a look at some other options at the $860 and $620 price points before committing to one of these - it's likely that you'll be able to find some better alternatives.

If you're still interested in learning more about the Sony Xperia 5 (2019) and Google Pixel 2 (2017), however, we wrote a summary of what we could find about them:

The Sony Xperia 5 (2019) was loved by reviewers at PCmag, a highly trusted source that performs reliable in-depth testing. It did great in its "The Best Phones at IFA 2019" roundup where it was named its "Ranked 1 out of 2", which, in itself, makes it a product worth considering.

Moving on to the Google Pixel 2 (2017): it has done really well in a number of roundups done by sources that perform objective and reliable testing, including Android Central, Techradar, and Android Authority - it won the "Best for updates" title from Android Central, "Best phone for photos" from Techradar, and "Ranked 1 out of 4" from Android Authority. That points towards it being a cut above most of its competitors.

Out of the sources that tested and rated both of these Smartphones, GSMArena preferred the Sony Xperia 5 (2019), whereas reviewers at Pocket-lint, PhoneArena, PCmag, and Android Authority liked the Google Pixel 2 (2017) better. Expert Reviews, TrustedReviews, and Techradar gave them identical review scores.

We also took a look at which sources liked these products best - the highest Sony Xperia 5 (2019) rating came from Digital Camera World, whereas the Google Pixel 2 (2017) most impressed reviewers at WIRED; they earned scores of 9 and 9, respectively.

Lastly, in order to better compare them to the rest of their competition, we averaged out their review scores. The Google Pixel 2 (2017) managed to get 8.3 out of 10 - considerably better than the 7.5 review average of Smartphones in general - whereas the Sony Xperia 5 (2019) earned 7.5 points.

It should be said that doing a direct Sony Xperia 5 (2019) vs. Google Pixel 2 (2017) comparison might not be entirely fair due to the difference in their prices - some sources don't put much weight on value for money and thus tend to give better review scores to more expensive products.
