TP-Link RE AC750 Plug-In (2019) vs TP-Link Desktop RE AC1900 (2015)

Analysis:

The TP-Link RE220 series (2019) is a great Wi-Fi Extender for its $29 asking price.

The TP-Link Desktop RE580D (2015), however, is merely passable at its $82 price point. If you're considering buying a Wi-Fi Extender in the $85 range, you might want to check out some of its competitors.

The TP-Link RE220 series (2019) has done great in quite a few roundups from some of the most highly trusted sources available, such as Wirecutter, TechGearLab, and Wirecutter (NYTimes), which perform high-quality in-depth testing. It got awarded the "Top Pick" title by Wirecutter, "Top Pick" by TechGearLab, and "Top Pick" by Wirecutter (NYTimes) in their respective roundups. Earning that much praise from such respected sources is undoubtedly an impressive accomplishment.

As for the TP-Link Desktop RE580D (2015), it was really well-received by reviewers at PCmag, a reliable source that's known for conducting its own, high-quality, in-depth testing. It performed great in its "The Best Wireless Range Extenders for 2020" roundup and was named its "Best for Homes With Many Different Devices", which, on its own, makes it a product that warrants a closer look.

We conducted an analysis of all of the review data that we could find on these two products. First, we focused on sources that tested and rated both of them, like PCmag, and learned that they all showed a preference for the TP-Link Desktop RE580D (2015).

Then we took a look at the highest review scores that these two Wi-Fi Extenders received. We found that the TP-Link RE220 series (2019) managed to earn a rating of 6 from PCmag, whereas the TP-Link Desktop RE580D (2015) got its highest, 8, score from reviewers at AVForums.

Finally, we calculated their average review scores from all of the data we could find and compared those to Wi-Fi Extenders in general. It turns out that the TP-Link Desktop RE580D (2015), with its 7.3 average, got reviewed considerably better than most of its competition - the overall average for Wi-Fi Extenders being 7.1 out of 10 points - whereas the TP-Link RE220 series (2019) performed worse than most, with an average review score of 6.0.

However, it's worth pointing out that a direct TP-Link RE220 series (2019) vs. TP-Link Desktop RE580D (2015) comparison might not be entirely fair, because some sources have a tendency of not taking value for money into account when reviewing products.
