Sony STR-DN1080 A/V receiver (2018) vs Yamaha RX-V485 AV receiver (2018)

Analysis:

The Sony A/V receiver STR-DN1080 makes for an outstanding AV Receiver at $598. The Yamaha RX-V485 receiver, however, while overall a good product for its asking price, doesn't quite manage to stand out from its competition - there are better AV Receivers that can be found for around $310 available here.

The Sony A/V receiver STR-DN1080 managed to impress reviewers from two reliable and unbiased sources that conduct their own hands-on testing, namely Expert Reviews and CNET. It performed great in their roundups - it earned the "The best mid-range Dolby Atmos AV receiver" title from Expert Reviews and "Best receiver for the money" from CNET, which makes it a product worthy of consideration.

As for the Yamaha RX-V485 receiver, it was really well-received by reviewers at Wirecutter (NYTimes), a reliable source that's known for conducting its own, high-quality, in-depth testing. It performed great in its "The Best AV Receivers for Most People" roundup and was named its "Top Pick", which, on its own, makes it a product that warrants a closer look.

When we thoroughly analyzed their review scores, we learned that all of the sources that tested both AV Receivers, including CNET, preferred the Sony A/V receiver STR-DN1080 over the Yamaha RX-V485 receiver.

We also took a look at which sources they managed to impress the most. The Sony A/V receiver STR-DN1080 was liked best by What Hi-Fi?, which gave it a score of 10, while the Yamaha RX-V485 receiver got its highest, 8, score from Techradar.

Lastly, we averaged out all of their review ratings and observed that the Sony A/V receiver STR-DN1080, with its 9.1 average, performed considerably better than most AV Receivers - the mean score for the product category being 8.2 out of 10 - while the Yamaha RX-V485 receiver managed an average of 8.0.

There's one caveat here - it might not be entirely justifiable to do a direct Sony A/V receiver STR-DN1080 vs. Yamaha RX-V485 receiver review average comparison since they aren't priced the same and more expensive products tend to get higher review scores from some sources.
