A high-tier workstation laptop that is built for performance.
Ranked in these QuestionsQuestion Ranking
Pro Great for graphics-related work
Workstations are mainly used to efficiently run certain types of applications, like 3D Max or AutoCAD. A big differential between a workstation and a consumer type laptop is the graphics card. They are optimized for stability instead of performance, thus it has a lower chance of failing during high workload situations.
The higher-tier hardware of Precision 7710 score 96 frames per second in 3D Max with the SPECviewperf 12 benchmark application, which proves it to be a powerful, mid-to-high range workstation laptop.
Pro Both display options are solid
Two choices are available for the 17 inch screen. Both of which can provide an expressive picture with their available range of colors. They span almost all 100% of the sRGB color space. And both of them have wide viewing angles.
One is an Ultra HD screen with a high brightness of 400 nits. The display can be comfortably used outdoors during daylight but not to the extent of direct sun exposure.
The other one is a Full HD screen. The screen’s brightness is average at 300 nits but is also quite uneven with its distribution. The corners tend to have lower illumination.
Pro Great Linux support
The hardware is Ubuntu certified. It ensures that it will run well without the need for extensive tinkering. Ubuntu can even be chosen as the preinstalled operating system.
Pro Good battery with the Full HD screen
When using a FHD screen it can idle for upwards of 13 hours and can run for approximately 7 hours with light usage. Choosing the Ultra HD display will, naturally, result in a shorter battery life.
Pro Performant enough for modern games
The hardware can be quite powerful so, naturally, the laptop can also be used to play games. It depends upon the configuration, but the top-of-the-line hardware can comfortably run such highly detailed games, like The Witcher 3 at 60 frames per second. But beware that the screen has a larger-than-normal response time which can create ghosting. It is when the pixels cannot transition between colors fast enough thus retaining a slightly delayed image.
It doesn’t produce any noise under light usage and even keeps itself relatively quiet during high workloads.
Pro Sturdy build
For such an expensive piece of equipment it is expected to have a rigid and solid case which can withstand the test of time.
Con High price
It gets very expensive. Workstations are naturally more expensive than regular laptops but the hardware capability and price ratio is simply not good. Need to evaluate whether the price is worth for the product that you’re getting.
Con Big and heavy
It is fairly big and heavy, as to be expected from a powerful workstation. It has the dimensions of 41.7 x 28.1 x 3.5 cm which comes off as pretty bulky and thick.
It weighs 3.6 kg. For comparison, most consumer type laptops weigh around 2 - 2.5kg.
