Google Now, an intelligents personal assistant, can be accessed directly from the homescreen. It's activated by saying "Ok, Google" and used simply by asking for information or giving it instructions using simple, natural language.
Google Now also gives context sensitive information in the form of cards that can be accessed by swiping to the left from the homescreen. These cards will offer directions to events planned, travel information, news based on interests, etc.
