The game does away with the shop mechanic entirely. No last hitting means players don't have to focus on a minigame for the first 20 minutes so they can jump into the action much faster. No shop means that supports aren't starved for cash and can remain strong and relevant throughout the game. No items allow for the hero-specific talent system to shine, which provides a much more unique and easily balanced way to enhance your character.

Even if you are in trouble because you lost almost all the game, you can still win by killing the enemy team on a stupid move they made at the end of the game. And it's never unfair: it's always because the losing team was overconfident and the winning one was the focus.

 Deep but not complex

The game removes a lot of pointless features of other games like last hitting and out-of-game rune/card buffs. It's also much clearer, with natural percentage based increases for characters rather than "armor/intelligence" stat increases. It also has a large map pool with greatly differing objectives in each one forcing you to consider how your playstyle will adapt to the opponent and the map itself. It may appear to be simple, but there is a lot of hidden depth.

 Easy to learn

Heroes of the Storm was created to be a streamlined, modern take on a MOBA, something that many others have aimed for but HotS succeeds in. Shared XP keeps teams leveling together; No Last Hits means that everyone gets XP from minions and puts less importance on who gets the kill since there is no Carry-player. Choosing talents instead of having to buy items give the game complexity without forcing players to wade through menus and travel back to base. The game still offers a challenge to master at higher levels but is more accessible to new players.

 Hero and playstyle diversity

Blizzard has gone above and beyond to introduce Heroes that break the standard molds for Tanks/Support/Damage characters. The talent system allows for diversity in how a character plays. Some heroes can even talent into multiple roles, like Varian, who can become either an assassin or a tank. Each Hero has 2 Heroic Abilities (Ultimates) to choose between, providing even more diversity in how each character can be played. Also, Blizzard has introduced several highly unconventional heroes, from The Lost Vikings, who are three separate characters controlled by one player, to Cho'Gall, who is two different players controlling one character, to Abathur, who doesn't venture out into the battlefield himself but manipulates the map and assists teammates from afar.

It's extraordinarily difficult and frustrating to reconnect to a game in Heroes if you disconnect for any reason. Reconnecting players can't simply "pick up where they left off", they have to simulate everything that has happened in the game between the moment they disconnected and the present time, which causes the reconnecting process to be extra slow and occasionally impossible.

 Fun emotes from heroes upon team work and team kills and more

If you play Nova and Kill Vala, Nova will say "HUNTER!?!? more like Hunted!!" Or if you play support and heal Raynor he will say "This medic is my new best friend". These emotes make it very clear what happened, and add a dimension of fun that you don't see in other MOBAs. Also, you can hear some emotes after other events, like your own hero death/respawn or during starting second of the match.

Has a relatively smaller playerbase than other MOBAs and Blizzard games, but one that comes from fans of every franchise represented in HotS, whether it be WC3 or Starcraft, leading to a wide range of players of all ages familiar with raiding in WoW, or the micromanagement in Starcraft. Regardless, many HotS players will share a common love for at some Blizzard franchises. All chat is disabled outside of Custom games, which arguably leads to less toxicity, as well as the fast paced nature and shorter match time which means less time for trivial flame wars as well as no surrender option and many comeback mechanics, as well as very little last hitting or kill stealing to be had leads to a far more relaxed environment.

No surrender option means that you have to waste 30 minutes playing a match you know you're going to lose, if the enemy team has 20 kills more than you and they're 4 levels ahead the game is basically over, if two players disconnect the game is basically over, if someone is deliberately feeding the game is basically over, you cannot win these games but if you leave you get leaver status and then you have to win 4 matches in order to play normal rounds again.

In any of the matchmaking queues, the chance of being put against someone with much higher skill than yourself is very high. The ranking system goes in this order: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster. On multiple occasions, silver players have been placed against an entire team of Grandmasters with bronze allies, leading to very poor experience.

 Badly designed and unbalanced game mechanics

The whole game mechanics are terrible: the fact there's no in-game currency ironically make the game heavily focused on farming (due to levels being an extremely important factor to win battles), there are no strategies you can use since objectives have a big impact on the game, so basically you end up just repeating cycles of farming/objective. Last but not least, the game balance is horrible, since skills were directly based on Blizzard's universe and without any adjustments to make characters unique or to create synergies with other characters or specific strategies. It's basically an oversimplified version of every MOBA out there.

Compared to the flexibility of an item system, the talent system limits the number of ways you can build a hero. The talent system is often structured so that there are 1-2 primary builds which usually focus on empowering one of the heroes basic abilities, and then a handful of niche talents. This causes a hero to feel very much the same every time you play it.

Heroes of the Storm has been designed around team play, as the company calls it a Hero Brawler, that focuses more on team fights and working toward objectives as a team. As with most team-based games, this means that if a player chooses to solo queue, that it may be difficult to play and coordinate with the rest of your team. The game does provide chat and a ping system similar to other MOBAs.

 Reconnect issues, UI issues

You cannot turn off camera lock on a hero if you accidentally press L to the game restart (on blizzard forums users reported also not being able to turn off this option until the restart of the pc) Not being able to enable music and sounds if you disabled them with (alt+s for sounds and alt+m for music) till the game restart. Listed bugs are from the game launch… Broken matchmaking system, AI fills teams unbalanced. Overall heroes are not feeling balanced, you most likely will lose against heroes like Gazlowe, Abatur etc They also deleted interesting map (the name of the map was copi i suppose) with undergrounds with no obvious reason. No updates at this point or hero/maps adds. You can’t win solo due to shared exp, you always tied to your team performance no matter what. Good ideas mixed with bad ideas and poor implementations. 5.3/10

Gameplay is balanced in the sense that while other MOBAs would have only around 30-60 viable picks for the competitive scene, Dota 2 has heroes and strategies in the game that are more varied, which enables more heroes to be picked in the competitive scene. Number of Heroes Picked in Dota 2's Recent Major Tournament in the past 4 months (as of July 2016) is 86/111 heroes picked and 100 out of 111 heroes picked. To compare between Dota 2 and LoL pick diversity, LoL has 64 out of 131 champions picked for LCS. There are also factors such as the ban/pick phase difference and the more rigid positions in LoL that may limit the viability for different playstyles and hero picks (typically it is 2 (AD, Support Bot) -1 (AP mid) -1 (Tank Off) - 1 (Jungler), with a possibility of double junglers in LoL). On the other hand in Dota 2, there are a lot more different positions compared to Lol/Smite such as Duo Mid (1-2-2), Traditional (2-1-2), One Jungler (1-2-1-1, most similar to league), One Roamer (1-2-1-1 as well with the difference being the hero roams the map for kills to create space for the mid and safelane rather than farm the jungle which can weaken a lane), Duo Roamer (1-1-1-2, all lanes are weaker in lane presence with the tradeoff being they get solo experience with two aggressive supports roaming), Trilane (1-1-3, Aggressive or Passive Trilane) and Abandoned Offlane (0-1-3-1 where the offlane is completely left empty due to a strong duo or trilane on the opposing team). More heroes are viable and balanced in Dota 2 partly due to the greater flexibility in laning. This can be attributed the mechanics such as creep pulling and creep stacking which allows the team doing trilane to make up for the shared experience between three heroes. Besides that, the existence of teleport scrolls that allow you to defend your towers or punish a tower dive also allows you to react and assist other lanes. In pub games, any hero/lane/lineup can work, and it is more about your individual mechanical skills (understanding of hero, combo execution, map awareness, last hitting, timings, item builds, flow) over the lack of coordination and teamwork (on both teams).

Smite has 6 game modes and all of them are extremely popular: Arena. A 5v5 deathmatch, no lanes or objectives. Arena is best for people who prefer intense combat over strategy. Good for impatient but independent players. Joust. A 3v3 mode, with a single lane and buff camps on one side, and an objective lair on the other side. The Demon Bull King provides a clearly interesting mechanic to Joust, kill it, and it disables the enemy towers, to prevent turtling, which is pretty common in Joust. Joust is great for working with a team. Everyone has a role to fill, and learning how to adjust your play for your two teammates is half the battle. Surprisingly focused on teamwork, despite small teams. Conquest. The typical 5v5 mode, three lanes, jungle, towers, objectives. Conquest is the standard game that everyone knows, and requires lots of communication. Siege. A 4v4 objective push map. Siege is similar to Joust, but has massive battles compared to small skirmishes. Two lanes definitely adds chaos to the mix. Assault. A 5v5 ARAM. Assault is randomized. Nobody gets upset when the team of all tanks lose. Just queue up again in 15 minutes. Clash. A 5v5 Conquest and Arena mix of style mode. Plus, there's a rotating Match of the Day (MOTD). A random game mode with a twist, like max cooldowns, no basic attacking, god swapping and more. MOTD can sometimes be more fun and interesting than anything else.

In Season 2, the Hunter class is the most powerful class in the game, giving birth to certain unique builds like the Unicorn Build, an item build revolving on power, penetration and attack speed on hunters. Hunter items were soon nerfed. Then, back in Season 2, the Guardian class dominates the scene. Very long crowd control chains can kill almost everyone in an ability channeling gods era, and shuts down the powerhouses of team fights, the Mages and ADCs. Giving birth to the unique DirtyBubble Build, a build focused on protections and cooldown to counter the crowd-controls and burst damages from tanks. We all hope the Season 3 changes will balance overpowered classes and make the meta stable.

The lack of overhead view causes what happens to your teammates to be almost completely unknown. Without good communication, you are running blind and might as well be playing the game solo. In other MOBAs, communication isn't as much of a necessity. If a "jungler" is nearby, you assume he wants to gank. When an ally dashes in, you assume he's positioning himself for a setup. But in Smite, an ally might have dashed out in order to run away from a bigger threat, or you didn't notice he was waiting for a good opportunity to ambush someone in your lane. The buildings and heroes on both sides have their own unique artstyle, but they are otherwise perfect mirrors of each other, so you will never feel like you missed out on a specific hero or playstyle due to your choice. It's a purely aesthetic choice, therefore remaining balanced and fair due to everything being equal on both sides. By playing one faction or the other, you will see the overarching story from different viewpoints, as well as choose teammates from your faction while facing off against the other. Since the faction choice is permanent, this gives players a chance to become attached to their faction and bond with teammates over their choice, while building a rivalry with the other. Rather than simply sharing a map with a mix of random players like most MOBAs, you and your teammates will consist of and represent your chosen faction as you fight for dominance.

Rather than simply flying around and shooting at each other (although, there is plenty of this too), there is a huge amount of strategy involved for players who enjoy some deeper gameplay over simply outgunning their opponent with lasers and cannons. Use asteroids as cover, use warp speed to escape from opponents (but be careful as it takes time to charge up!), and know when to use your shields. The battle itself happens in three dimensions, meaning you can attack your opponent from all sides, including above or below. This brings a whole new aspect of play to the field, as you can strategically maneuver your ship into prime attack positions out of the direct sight of your opponent to unleash a surprise attack.

Laser and gun blasts have a nice glow to them as they fly through space and it's satisfying to watch as they hit a target and explode in a shower of sparks, flames, and smoke. Shield effects look slick as they twist and surround the ship in a variety of different forms and colors, and translate well to the gameplay aspect of making the player feel protected. Asteroids of various shapes and sizes are scattered around the map and are detailed with various shapes and textures. Stars and planets can be seen hanging around in the background, casting their light and shadows over the game map with tremendous detail.

Taking command of your space ship feels great. You have access to a wide variety of high tech laser weapons and shields, which makes you feel like you've been sent hundreds of years into the future. The ships move and steer realistically in zero gravity, and off in the distance stars and planets shine and twinkle, creating the feeling of actually being in the far reaches of space. If you've ever watched a fleet of space ships dueling in a sci-fi movie and wanted to relive the action, then this game will be right up your alley. Travel is realistic. You'll have to plot a slow, calculated course around asteroids and other space debris, and can be used as strategic cover or a prime spot to ambush your opponent. Just make sure you don't crash into them when you activate your boost - just one of the many dangers you have to be aware of when doing battle. Lasers look powerful when they zip through space and explode in a shower of sparks on your opponents hull. Shields give off a glow and soak up hits with a satisfying feel. The game does a great job of envisioning how a space battle would look and feel through the special effects. Your crew actually talks to you during battles, giving you status updates on your ship, the game, and how your shields are holding up. It's a nice touch to help make the game more immersive and feel like you're actually commanding a real space ship with a living, breathing crew.

The main goal of each 5v5 battle is to destroy your opponent's homebase. However, in true MOBA fashion, the maps are divided into several sectors and lanes, with various mines providing buffs and resources if captured. If a team plays well together and stays in communication, they will be able to capture the mines before the enemy, resulting in the upper hand via more resources right off the bat. Having a solid attack strategy and working closely with your team is key. One lonely ship can't do it all alone, so this game requires solid teamwork if you want to succeed. To accomplish this, you will want to consider things like providing cover fire for your teammates as they capture mines, or using warp speed to get to a team member in distress. Keep an eye out for teammates being pummeled with gunfire by the opponent and get to their location to help. Fly in a formation that promotes protection of the player controlling the healing ship. Play on the strengths and weaknesses of different ships for your team composition. There is an endless amount of strategy that can be applied by teams who work well together.

For those looking for a casual game to play at a slow pace in small chunk Clash of Clans has gameplay that fits that scenario quite well. Players slowly build up their base into a fortress by creating building to contain within as well as walls to surround it. This all happens over time and can not be immediately done so is a game focused on being played throughout a day in small pieces over many months to years. Slowly but surely the time invested will lead to creating a large base that can take on other large opponents.

Clash of clans has nice gameplay, and can be quite addicting, however, the in-app purchases are tempting in a way. No matter what you always run out of something, and will have to wait a while to get it back. The game progresses at a slower rate when you don't simply spend money on this game. I'll admit, in general its a great game, with over a million players worldwide, its got action, in-app purchases, fun characters, you name it. The only concern is the very slow pace of this game that makes it a long while until you can actually get better. If you do want to move at a quicker pace, the only thing you can really do to speed it up is to pay for in-game currency and items. This game shouldn't matter to you a lot, but you should keep in mind that this isn't an immediate fast-moving game.
