As a superset of Python it's possible to import and use all of Python's libraries.
Python was already pretty good at this, but Xonsh's shell-like features makes it even easier to interface with command line programs.
Xonsh is Python, plus some shell-like features. Any valid Python 3.4+ script should work as a .xsh script. Use what you already know.
Xonsh can be used for scripts, but it was designed as a complete shell. It has nice autocomplete features in its interactive mode. You can use it as your main shell instead of bash or cmd.
