All systems talk to one another via a central hub. This is similar to the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), only the hub provides less functionality, simply taking care of receiving, transforming, and routing messages, as opposed to offering number of other services which can be plugged into the workflow in the way an ESB allows. Another commonly cited difference is that ESBs are typically more scalable due to the application adapters being hosted on the source/target applications and thus distributing load away from the ESB "Hub" itself; however with a federated hub and spoke architecture (a solution which extends the hub into multiple hub and spokes which can talk with one another) this issue is also alleviated.
