Pros
Pro Quick sessions so you can play in short bursts
Being that Spelunky is at its heart a roguelike the gameplay sessions can tend to be quick as the player will die quite often. This makes for something that can be played in quick bursts throughout the day. the convenient saving also lends to this as a game that is still ongoing can be quickly saved in order to be picked up at a later time.
Cons
Con There's no check-point system
You can't save the game and you can't go back to a level with your previous equipment. It's just a one-run-only game where you go through several levels and suddenly die because a Yeti throws you off.
Con The game is for speedrunners
You'll think that the game is much safer and easier for a new gamer, but after you spend 2:30 mins in this game you'll see the ghost while you're still in the starting level. He will first appear when the music starts slowing down and the air around the game will be nothing but spectral fog. This means you have to hurry up and go to the next exit as fast as you can or you will be killed in the game.

Pro Provides an interesting challenge by heavily relying on increasing your skill
Spelunky gives the player everything needed to succeed from the start so it is only when the players skills get better will they advance.
